Message from Director General of Health Services of Sri Lanka

It is with immense pleasure that I send this message at the occasion of official launch of the Palliative Care Association of Sri Lanka.

Today, Sri Lanka is subjected to many transitions including epidemiological, demographic and lifestyle which has changed the landscape of the disease burden where non communicable diseases and cancers in particular are on the increase. As such, focusing attention on palliative care is a timely intervention.

Palliative care is an essential component that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual.

I admire the initiative taken by this esteemed specialty towards the improvement of the health of people of Sri Lanka. I hope and trust that all members of the association would continue to contribute and improve the Palliative Care services under various challenging situations. While congratulating the organizing committee of Palliative Care Association of Sri Lanka I wish them all the success in future endeavors.
