His Excellency Hon. Maithripala Sirisena
Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
Message from the Hon. President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
I am pleased to send this message of good wishes to the launch of the Palliative Care Association of Sri
Lanka, which seeks to address a very important need in our health services.
Lessening the severity of pain and suffering of those who are ill especially when cure is not possible, is
at the very core of Palliative Care; an important aspect of compassion in the treatment of patients in
keeping with the cultural norms that have prevailed in our country through centuries.
This is of special benefit to those who are gravely and terminally ill, who need the compassionate care
that brings them emotional and spiritual support to mitigate the pain and suffering associated with
their health condition. It helps both patients and their families to have the assurance of care and understanding
of feelings at such difficult times.
The palliative Care Association of Sri Lanka takes an important and most commendable initiative with a
well-defined program using interdisciplinary teams of health care professional and trained volunteers,
to address issues of symptom control, and pain managements with the necessary emotional, spiritual
and humane support to those who are ill and their near and dear. This will be of especial value to the
terminally ill who wish to spend their last days amidst family members and loved ones, with the
assurance of alleviated suffering to all.
With this initiative, Sri Lanka joins many other countries with health services that provide palliative care
in the homes of patients, hospitals or nursing homes, adding to our progress in health care services.
I am glad to extend my fullest cooperation to this very noble cause and wish every success to Palliative
Care Association of Sri Lanka in its future endeavors for the advance of health care in Sri Lanka.
