Message from Secretary/Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medicine of Sri Lanka

Even though Sri Lanka has a medical system which is the envy of most south asian nations, it has been lacking in one of the most important areas in medicine until recently. That is Palliative Care which is about looking after the physical , psychosocial and spiritual well being of patients diagnosed with a life limiting illness.

Giving dignity and comfort to such patients, appeals to the cultural and religious up bringing of most Sri Lankans, who takes pride in looking after their frail and the elderly through our extended family systems and values.

It therefore gives me great pleasure in sending this message on the occasion of the launch of the Palliative Care Association of Sri Lanka, which will be the main umbrella organisation advocating for the Palliative Care needs of all Sri Lankans.

Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown origin (CKDu) is causing major physical , psychosocial, and financial hard ship to people in most parts of the country at present. The timely advent of the Palliative Care Association of Sri Lanka with the help of overseas expertise will help in combating the symptom burden of these patients in a very meaningful way.

I wish them all the very best!
